Jaipur is again talking seriously about a bigger metro network, and this time the conversation goes beyond old alignments. In a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, officials were asked to prepare a fresh expansion plan to connect more densely populated parts of the city, including Amer, Jagatpura, Bagrana on Agra Road and ISBT Hira Pura.

For a city that still relies on one operational metro stretch from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar, the announcement matters because it signals a broader transport vision instead of a single-corridor update.

Quick Highlights

  • A new Jaipur Metro expansion plan is being prepared for Amer, Jagatpura, Bagrana and Hira Pura.
  • The chief minister reviewed Phase 2 along with Phase 1C and Phase 1D progress.
  • Two possible route options have been discussed for Amer.
  • Jaipur Metro Phase 2 is still awaiting central approval.

The review also covered work linked to Phase 1C from Badi Chaupar to Transport Nagar and Phase 1D from Mansarovar to Ajmer Road Chauraha.

Where the new routes could go

According to the review presentation, officials put multiple alignments on the table. For Amer, one option would run from Galta Gate via Delhi Bypass and Jal Mahal. The second would take the line underground from Badi Chaupar to Zorawar Singh Gate before continuing on an elevated track toward Amer. A final decision is still pending because the underground section would carry a higher cost.

Jagatpura is being considered through a corridor from Transport Nagar via Raja Park and Aranya Bhawan to Apex Circle. Officials are also looking at improved connectivity from stations around Tonk Road, Sanganer and the airport belt. Another proposal would link ISBT Hira Pura through 200 Feet Road, while a separate extension is being explored toward Bagrana and further ahead to Kanota via Agra Road.

Why the timing matters

The review comes at a time when Jaipur Metro's long-discussed Phase 2 still has not moved into execution. The roughly 42-kilometre detailed project report was sent by the Rajasthan government to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in May 2025 and is still awaiting approval. Only after that clearance can the tendering process begin.

Metro officials have indicated that tendering itself could take at least two months after approval, and construction could take about five years. That means residents should read the latest expansion push as a planning move for now, not an immediate rollout on the ground.

Jaipur still runs on a short operational stretch

That gap between ambition and delivery is what makes this review important. Jaipur Metro began operations in 2014, yet after more than a decade the city still has only about 11 kilometres of active service between Mansarovar and Badi Chaupar.

If the wider network eventually reaches areas such as Amer, Jagatpura and Hira Pura, it could ease road traffic pressure and widen public transport access across Jaipur. But the real test will be whether pending approvals and route planning finally translate into visible work on the ground.
