Rajasthan has set a target of 10 crore tree plantations for the upcoming monsoon season under Mission Hariyalo Rajasthan. Chairing a review at the Chief Minister's Office in Jaipur, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma told departments to prepare a detailed action plan and keep the work under continuous monitoring.

The state wants the campaign to begin on World Environment Day, June 5, and gather pace through July, August and September. The review made it clear that the target will depend on groundwork being completed early, with departments told to finish land selection, fencing, pit digging and other pre-monsoon preparation before the rains arrive.

Quick Highlights

  • Rajasthan has set a 10 crore tree-planting target for the upcoming monsoon season.
  • The campaign is to start on June 5, 2026 and scale up through July, August and September.
  • Departments were told to complete site selection, fencing and pit digging before the monsoon window opens.
  • The state wants plantation plans prepared for railway assets, major roadsides and grazing land.
  • The review also prioritised gular planting, fruit saplings for farmers, drone seeding, Namo Nurseries and Namo Vans.

What departments have to finish before the rains

The review treated the campaign as a statewide coordination exercise rather than a forest-department-only drive. Sharma said the Chief Secretary should monitor the plantation work, while the forest department was told to maintain coordination with other departments so planting sites are ready as soon as the monsoon begins.

The immediate to-do list is practical and deadline-driven. Departments were instructed to complete site selection, fencing, pit digging and other field preparation ahead of time. The Revenue Department is to help identify land, Indian Railways is to be brought into plantation planning on railway assets, and the Public Works Department is expected to prepare district-level plans for major roadside stretches and grazing land.

Which plantation areas and schemes are being prioritised

The review also set out the kinds of plantation work the state wants to push this year. Sharma told the forest department to give priority to gular trees, ensure free fruit-bearing saplings for farmers under the chief minister's plantation campaign and arrange watering support where needed through CSR-backed resources such as tankers. The state also wants local Vriksh Mitras involved in the drive.

Beyond routine plantation work, the meeting asked for sandalwood forest sites in Udaipur, Sirohi and Banswara to move ahead with fencing and drip irrigation. It also directed the forest department to prioritise drone seeding in hilly and forest areas and plantation work in sanctuary zones. In parallel, the state wants one Namo Nursery in every district and phased development of Namo Vans at each panchayat samiti.

How the target fits the larger state mission

This year's monsoon target is part of a broader 50 crore tree-planting goal for 2024 to 2028 under Mission Hariyalo Rajasthan. The state said it had already crossed its targets in the previous two cycles, with 7.22 crore plantations against a 7 crore target in 2024 and more than 11.74 crore against a 10 crore target in 2025.

That gives the 2026 monsoon drive two pressures at once: the state has already shown it can exceed its stated numbers, and now it has to prove that the same pace can be sustained with stronger pre-monsoon preparation and wider coordination across departments.
