Two decades after the Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) began bringing writers, readers and ideas together in the Pink City, the celebrated literary gathering is preparing for its landmark 20th edition. Presented by Vedanta and supported by the Government of Rajasthan, the Festival will return to Jaipur from January 14 to 18, 2027, marking a journey that has grown from a gathering of writers and readers into an international platform for literature, culture and conversation.
Anchored around the theme “20 Years of Ideas. Stories. Conversations.”, the 2027 edition will celebrate JLF’s two-decade legacy while looking ahead to the next chapter of literary and cultural exchange.
20 Years of Jaipur Literature Festival
Since its inception in 2008, the Jaipur Literature Festival has evolved from a gathering of writers and readers in Jaipur into an internationally recognised literary platform.
Over the years, the Festival has hosted more than 8,000 writers, speakers and artists, welcomed over 5 million visitors on-ground, and reached an estimated audience of more than 1 billion through digital platforms, broadcast partnerships and media networks.
Beyond its scale, JLF has sought to bring literature and ideas into wider public conversations. Its open and accessible format has taken literary engagement beyond traditional publishing and academic circles, creating a space where audiences can encounter diverse voices, perspectives and ideas.
Over the years, its stages have welcomed influential voices from literature, culture and public life, including Nobel laureates, Booker Prize winners, heads of state, economists, philosophers, artists and global thinkers.
From Jaipur to a Global Literary Network
What began in Jaipur has steadily developed an international footprint. Today, JLF has a network of more than 15 editions across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Spain, Australia, the Middle East, Maldives and Ireland.
Through these international editions, the Festival has created a cultural bridge between Indian and global literary traditions—taking Indian perspectives to audiences overseas while bringing international conversations into dialogue with voices from India.
Its influence has also extended beyond its own editions. According to the Festival, more than 300 literary gatherings and festivals across India, the region and around the world have drawn inspiration from the culture of open literary exchange that JLF has helped foster.
Rajasthan’s Longstanding Association with JLF
Despite its global expansion, Jaipur and Rajasthan remain central to the Festival’s identity.
The Government of Rajasthan’s association with JLF dates back to its inception in 2008. Rajasthan has provided the Festival with a distinctive cultural setting, while continued support and access to state resources have contributed to its growth into an internationally recognised literary and cultural platform.
In turn, JLF has brought writers, thinkers, artists and audiences from India and around the world to Jaipur, placing the city and Rajasthan within a wider global literary conversation while celebrating the state’s rich cultural heritage.
Multilingual Storytelling at the Heart of JLF
One of the defining elements of JLF’s two-decade journey has been its commitment to multilingual storytelling and cultural plurality.
Through multilingual programming, translation initiatives and sessions featuring writers across Indian and international languages, the Festival has created opportunities for regional voices and literary traditions to reach wider audiences.
For its 20th-anniversary milestone, the Festival’s announcement has been released simultaneously across all 22 official languages of India, reinforcing its focus on taking stories and ideas across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
Namita Gokhale, Festival Co-Director, Jaipur Literature Festival, said the milestone year would also celebrate India’s literary heritage and linguistic diversity through the Bhasha Swarmala series.
Conversations Beyond Literature
While books remain at its heart, the Jaipur Literature Festival has evolved into a forum for conversations that extend across disciplines.
Its programming spans literature, history, politics, science, economics, gender studies, health, migration and the environment, reflecting the Festival’s belief that knowledge and ideas are interconnected.

The theme of the landmark edition, “20 Years of Ideas. Stories. Conversations.”, reflects both JLF’s legacy and its continuing evolution as it enters a new decade.
