Jaipur Discom and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) have invited proposals for a 250 kW/250 kWh sodium-ion battery energy storage pilot at K.L. Saini Stadium in Mansarovar. The project will test whether storing electricity close to consumers can ease pressure on the local distribution network during peak demand and improve the use of rooftop solar power.

The request for proposals was issued in Jaipur on October 28, 2026, during the second day of the national conference of electricity distribution utilities. The system is planned at distribution-transformer level, bringing the trial to the part of the network that directly serves nearby consumers.

What the Mansarovar battery pilot will test

The trial will assess sodium-ion technology as an alternative to established battery options such as lithium-ion. A central question is how effectively a battery installed near a working transformer can support electricity supply when local demand is at its highest.

For Jaipur, the project also offers a way to study rooftop solar storage under Rajasthan’s climate conditions. Its findings will help assess whether this approach is suitable for wider use in electricity distribution networks.

  • Proposed site: K.L. Saini Stadium, Mansarovar, Jaipur.
  • Power capacity: 250 kW.
  • Energy storage capacity: 250 kWh.
  • Main tests: Peak-demand management, rooftop solar use and sodium-ion battery performance at transformer level.

Jaipur Discom and GEAPP divide project responsibilities

Jaipur Discom will provide the location, technical staff and operational data for the pilot. GEAPP will support system design, performance monitoring and technical work, as well as train the utility’s engineers.

The two partners will share the findings so other electricity distribution companies can assess whether sodium-ion storage would suit their own networks.

Field results to guide future storage decisions

Energy Secretary and Rajasthan Discoms Chairperson Aarti Dogra said rising demand first puts pressure on distribution transformers. She identified the pilot as an opportunity to examine how an alternative storage technology could reduce that pressure while storing rooftop solar electricity in local conditions.

GEAPP Country Head Tanya Singhal said distribution utilities need a choice of reliable battery technologies. Testing sodium-ion storage on an operating transformer would give them real performance data to inform future decisions.

The proposal invitation marks a step towards setting up the pilot. Its effect on peak demand, solar utilisation and supply reliability will be assessed through the trial.
